ISTQB is an internationally-valued software testing certification, the examination for which is conducted online through a testing exam provider via Member Boards. The Member Boards authorize an Exam provider to offer exams locally and internationally. Candidates aspiring for the certification have to clear the exam. International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) Certification exam is available in 70 countries via their Member Boards, whose name can vary from country to country. For instance, it is Indian Testing Board (ITB) in India and American Software Testing Qualifications Board (ASTQB) in United States.

The Foundation level exam just tests the knowledge of the candidate, which is very preliminary to the profile. It does not require any work experience. It covers the most common concepts and associated terminology and also acts as the stepping stone to the advanced level certifications. Advanced Level is more intense and requires an extensive knowledge about the concepts. It is practice-oriented and tests the caliber of candidates in Quality testing.

ISTQB Foundation is the entry-level exam designed for freshers and also for those ambitious professionals who are planning to ladder up the ISTQB certification path. The exam is scheduled to test the candidates’ broad understanding of Software testing, and lay foundations for the advanced level certifications.

The Foundation-level exam covers six topics: fundamentals of testing; testing in the software lifecycle; static techniques like reviews; behavioral (black-box) and structural (white-box) test design; test management; and testing tools.

There is no such prerequisite for the foundation level ISTQB Certification exam.

Foundation-level exam is a 60 minutes paper (or 75 minutes for candidates taking exams that are not in their native or local language), which comprises of 40 multiple-choice questions carrying one mark each. A candidate has to score 65% (26 or more points) in order to clear the exams.

The Agile extension certificate examination is the one, which focuses on the specific knowledge area. Due to regular updation of technology, the candidate has to take the updated extension exam in order to incorporate new or updated knowledge on these topics.

Individuals who need to implement Agile methods in their work environment, or those looking forward to implement it in future, must aim for the extension certificate.

The candidate has to enquire about the same with the National or Regional Board. An extension certificate will be issued only after passing the FL exam and the extension exam.

The Agile Extension exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions designed to evaluate a candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the Agile syllabus. A grade of 65% or better must be attained in order to pass. The exam is closed-book and must be completed in 60 minutes.

National or Regional Boards or their Examination Providers are authorized to offer certification exams. A candidate can contact the National Board to get the detailed list of Examination providers in the country. Interested individuals can apply to their National or Regional Board, to get local exam dates, applicable fees and booking information.

The exams are available in offline paper-based or computer-based electronic formats.

Each question is classified as per the level of difficulty. The Foundation and Advanced levels compromise four different K levels (K1 to K4): • K1 (Remember) = The candidate should remember or recognize a term or a concept. • K2 (Understand) = The candidate should select an explanation for a statement related to the question topic. • K3 (Apply) = The candidate should select the correct application of a concept or technique and apply it to a given context. • K4 (Analyze) = The candidate can separate information related to a procedure or technique into its constituent parts for better understanding and can distinguish between facts and inferences.

In case of online exams, the result is sent to you by normal e-Mail or may be given immediately after the exam. In case of paper-based exams, the result will be dispatched via normal mail.

No, the ISTQB certificates are valid lifelong.

In case of Foundation-level exams: Each correct answer is allocated one mark.In case of Advanced-level exams: Each K2 correct answer is allocated 1 point. K3 questions are allocated 2 points each, and while K4 may score either 2 or 3 points.
